Born on May 29, 1944, in Westboro, Massachusetts, Richard—known to many as Rick—lived a life marked by dedication to his family, service to his country, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life.
Rick was drafted into the Vietnam War and served as an officer in the 25th Infantry Division. His military career continued as he taught ROTC for the Army at Indiana University and later served as an intelligence officer in Germany and Switzerland. His commitment to service left a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of working alongside him.
Beyond his military career, Rick found immense joy in spending time with his family. He cherished every moment with them, sharing stories, jokes, and offering a listening ear. He especially loved fishing trips with his son and grandson—moments that became treasured memories for all involved. Rick deeply enjoyed his days with his daughter in law Melissa who took great care of him. She would prepare his favorite home cooked meals daily that he loved eating, and would always talk about how wonderful they were. A passionate sports fan, Rick enjoyed football and baseball, always eager to discuss the latest games and cheer on his favorite teams.
Rick is survived by his son, Matthew Whitney and his wife Melissa; grandchildren Jade Bullett (Whitney), KayLee Whitney, Elijah Whitney, Mara Whitney, and great-grandchildren Grey Bullett and Elodie Bullett. His son Brian Whitney and his wife Amanda; Jaxon Whitney, Ada Whitney, and Claire Whitney. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on February 24, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home, located at 4150 E Third St., Bloomington, Indiana.
Rick would want those who knew him to find joy in life's simple moments rather than sorrow in his passing. His kindness and warmth will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
