

Robert Lewis Gibson was born October 13, 1919, to Alva J. and Flora Lewis Gibson in Elkins, West Virginia. (Robert Gibson’s father was principal of Elkins High School on the day of his birth. To celebrate the birth of their class mascot, the student body, after dropping off baby gifts, decided to take the day off and walked out of the school.) Robert was educated in the public schools of West Virginia and attended West Virginia University, where he received his B.S. degree in Education in 1941. In June, 1941, he was called into service and assigned to the First Armoured Division at Fort Knox, KY. In March, 1942, the Division was ordered to Northern Ireland and in November, 1942, participated in the D-Day Invasion of North Africa. Robert served in the Armed Services until the termination of World War II in June, 1945. During his service he earned four Bronze Stars and three Purple Hearts and was discharged with the rank of Captain. In January, 1946, he married Juanita Jenkins!
(who pre-deceased him in 2010) of Atlanta, Georgia, and they moved to Morgantown, West Virginia, where Robert enrolled in the Master’s degree program at West Virginia University and was employed at Morgantown High School as a teacher/counselor. In 1951, he was employed at the West Virginia Institute of Technology as the Director of Guidance and Associate Professor of Education. He completed his doctoral program in Counseling and Student Personnel Services in 1955 at Columbia University and was subsequently employed at the University of Toledo (1956) as Chairman of the Counselor Education Program and Associate Professor of Education. In 1965, he was employed at Indiana University as a Professor of Education. In 1969, he was appointed Chairman of the Department of Counselor Education and served through 1982. During his tenure he organized and co-chaired the development of Indiana University cooperative programs with the Bermuda College and the School of Education at the Univ!
ersity of Edinburgh in Scotland. He participated in both these!
programs for over 30 years. He also co-authored eleven textbooks and co-directed 15 funded research projects. He authored numerous periodical articles. He retired from Indiana University in 1990, but continued to do consulting work until 2010. He is survived by his children, Katherene Gibson (Grand Rapids, Michigan), Paul Lewis Gibson (Sharon Perry) (Phoenix, Arizona) and Nancy Lee Wallace (Joseph) (Spencer, Indiana). Also surviving are four grandchildren: Emma Fynewever (Ryan) (Grand Rapids, Michigan); Hanna Childers (Matthew) (Grand Rapids, Michigan); Ashley Sample (Ellettsville, Indiana); and Chandler Gibson (Phoenix, AZ). He is also survived by four great-grandchildren: Owen and Miles Fynewever (Grand Rapids, Michigan) and Arianna and Destiny Collier (Ellettsville, Indiana) as well as five nephews: Patrick, Joe, and William Beatty; and David and John Tingley. He is survived by his long-time friend, co-author and colleague, Marianne H. Mitchell.
