

Ruth Janette OIsen, age 83, of Bloomington, died Tuesday evening at I.U. Health; Bloomington Hospice House. Born February 9, 1931 in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of Elbert Lee and Marguerite (Hatzell) Spradling. Ruth loved cooking and working on her farm, especially raising sheep, hogs and cattle. She was well known for the gardens she planted year after year. People were amazed at the amount of vegetables she was able to grow in such a small space. Ruth also enjoyed raising rhubarb and was often asked to make her strawberry-rhubarb cobblers as well as other pies for church dinners and bake sales.
Ruth is survived by her loving family; two sons and daughter-in-law, Roger and Kay Olsen and Ronald Olsen, all of Bloomington; two grandsons and granddaughters-in-law, Ryan and Kelly Olsen, of Gosport and Randy and Kristy Olsen, of Bloomfield; four great-grandchildren, Hunter Ryan Olsen, Joslyn Beth Olsen, Noah Ray Olsen and Wyatt Reed Olsen; two sisters and brother-in-law, Ollie Walden and Mary and David Pauley, all of Bloomington. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Raymond Richard Olsen, on July 1, 1997, one brother, Jerry A. Spradling and one infant sister, Rose Irene Spradling.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday at Mt. Pleasant Christian Church with Rev. Kory Ferree officiating. Burial will follow in Simpson Chapel Cemetery. Friends may visit the family on Friday at Day Funeral Home from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 12 Noon to 2:00 p.m. at the church.
