1949-2023
Mike Reid passed away August 5th with his loving wife and faithful canine companion at his side.
He will be greatly missed by his wife of 36 years, Patti, daughter Kristie (Jason) Ayers from Covington, son Kirk (Sarah) from Ellensburg and his five dearly loved grandchildren, Haley and Isabella Ayers, Austin (Brook), Cole and Keira Reid. Just days before his passing Mike was able to meet and hold his first great grandchild, week old Adeline Reid. The photo of their meeting will be treasured by the family and, with Mike’s smile while holding Adeline, it needs no caption.
Mike is survived by siblings Brian, Carolyn and Doug.
Mike was a man of action and of the great outdoors. Son of the late Gib and Eileen Reid he was born in rural Chugiak Alaska where he spent his first 15 years. Active in Boy Scouts he learned a range of outdoor skills which he would employ the rest of his life.
Moving to Washington State he finished school and went to work in construction before settling on a career with Pacific Northwest Bell—later Quest—as an equipment operator. Retiring after 31 years Mike purchased his own equipment and established Mike Reid Construction. His entire career Mike was able to work where he was happiest, outdoors.
He was a member of the Green River Valley Jeep Club and, at the time of his passing, owned three Jeeps. Perhaps his favorite was a classic 1943 Willys which he restored to its original military look. He enjoyed displaying his work at local military vehicle shows.
He was a member of the Amateur Ham-Radio Club and worked on projects which enhanced signal coverage throughout the Cascade Mountains. If there is an award for the person who passes with the most radios Mike’s expansive collection would put him in the running.
He was also active in the Pleasure Walking Horse Club.
“Mike’s Mantra: The Mountains are Calling and I Must Go”
Mike was a mountain man at heart. All of his hobbies drew him to the mountains year around. Horses, Jeeps and trucks gave him fair weather access to remote and beautiful areas. His many snowmobiles and classic restored snowcat gave access in the winter.
Patti and Mike purchased a mountain retreat near Teanaway which provided them a place to call “home” in the mountains.
A fall tradition, Mike’s mountain hunting camp, introduced Mike’s kids and grandkids to the great outdoors. Mike never tired of telling the story of his grandson’s first successful hunt. Mike also introduced his late father-in-law, Don, to the camp and dubious tales of that trip are still told today.
Mike was an outdoorsman and steward of the land who lived on his own terms. He was a husband, father, grand and great grandfather and friend to many. He will be missed.
