Charles Michael DeVischer, a Boulder native, passed away on August 4, 2024, at Foothills Hospital in Boulder, CO. Charles was born at Boulder Community Hospital to Arthur and Mary DeVischer, on September 3, 1945. The DeVischer family lived on Alpine St. and he always said, “my mother walked across the street to the hospital to have me.” Charles attended school at Sacred Heart, Casey Junior High, and Boulder High School. In his younger years, Charles, a.k.a. Chuck, developed a relationship with his barber, at White’s Barber, on The Hill, who mentioned to Chuck that if he went to barber school, he would hire him. He received his master’s barber license from American Barber College, Denver, CO only to receive his draft notice, October 1965. He served with the US Army, in Korat, Thailand and was honorably discharged from the Army, July 1967. Upon returning to Boulder, he found that men and boys were growing their hair long, so men’s haircuts were few and far between, so he decided to expand his opportunities by attending Mile High Cosmetology School in Denver, CO. With both a barber license and cosmetology license, he opened the first unisex salon, C Michael’s, in Longmont, CO. With that success, he opened his second one in Arvada, CO. Later he sold them and opened Stan and Ollies in Boulder. In the mid 80's, he purchased Ruble's Barber Shop, in the Ideal Shopping Center, where he received his first haircut. He changed the name to Charlie’s Barber Shop and became known as “Charlie the Barber”. Charlie’s Barber Shop later became Alpine Barbers. Charlie the Barber developed many customers and friends throughout his years of barbering in Boulder and many people would still recognize him and would tell him, “You cut my hair.” Chuck retired in 2019. With his longtime significant other, Carol Miller, they traveled frequently both in the United States and Europe, Ocean Cruises, River Cruises, Caribbean, Hawaii, Mexico, and spending time both in Colorado and Arizona. Chuck was the youngest of 12 children. He has four (4) surviving siblings, Larry DeVischer, Arvada, CO, Sally Darby, Arvada, CO, Janice DeVischer, Littleton, CO and Jean Belyeu, Arvada, CO., also surviving him are nieces, Kelly Darby, Westminster, CO, Tracey Sutherland, Arvada, CO, Debbie Tawell, Atherton, CA and nephew, Jack Darby of Punta Gorda, FL. Nephew, Chad Darby, preceded him in death. His memorial service is being held at Sacred Heart of Mary Church, 6739 South Boulder Road, at 11 am on Friday, August 23. Following the Interment, a reception at Sacred Heart of Mary Reception Hall will be held. If attending the reception, please RSVP, Kelly Darby @ [email protected].
