He graduated from Wakefield High School, received a B.A. from Nebraska State Teachers College, and an M.S. from the University of Colorado. Charles worked as a chemist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration where he led several research projects such as collecting airborne samples of pollutants.
His love for the outdoors was evident in all parts of his life—whether tending to his yard, cultivating beautiful flowers, or tackling home improvement projects with an unwavering dedication.
Exploring the roads less traveled brought Charles endless joy. He spent many days venturing through the Colorado mountains, discovering new paths and hidden gems. His road trips often led him back to Nebraska, revisiting the places of his childhood and rekindling treasured memories. As a devoted train enthusiast, he found great joy in watching the rail yard from the Golden Spike Tower, marveling at the movement and power of the locomotives.
Beyond his love for exploration, Charles had an enduring admiration for nature. He visited national parks throughout the western United States, especially Rocky Mountain National Park, where he found peace among the towering peaks and scenic landscapes.
Charles is survived by his wife Ruth, step-son Dan, sister Janis, sister-in-law Lynne, many loving nephews, nieces, and friends. He is predeceased by his parents Carroll and May, first wife Ann, and brothers Richard and James.
A graveside service for Charles will be held Tuesday, June 17, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Crist Mortuary, 3395 Penrose Place, Boulder, CO 80301.
