Born July 18, 1938, in Henderson, NC, the eldest of three children, to Benjamin Harrell Mixon, a contractor, and Ruth (Forsberg) Mixon, a homemaker. After growing up in Henderson, she received a Bachelor of Music degree in organ and piano from Greensboro College, Greensboro, NC, in 1960. She did one year of graduate work in organ at Yale University, where she met and married James N. Corbridge, Jr., in 1961. They lived in New Haven, CT, until 1963 while he finished law school.
They moved to New York City for two years before relocating to Boulder, CO, in 1965, with his appointment to the law faculty at the University of Colorado. They had two children, and the family enjoyed many summers at Wild Goose, a boys’ camp in Maine, as well as two sabbaticals in Europe. They were divorced in 1990.
She worked at the University of Colorado as an administrative assistant for over 20 years, first in the School of Pharmacy for a federal Alcohol Research Center grant, and then in the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology as faculty liaison and for NIH training grants.
Once her children were grown, she returned to her love of music, joining the choir at First Congregational Church in Boulder, substituting occasionally as organist or as piano accompanist, and participating in choir tours to Germany and Sweden. Through the church, she participated in work projects in Germany, Guatemala, New Orleans and Houston, and for many years she also volunteered monthly at the Community Food Table meal for the homeless.
She participated in the Boulder Bach Festival for several years, first as a board member and then as coordinator of the annual Kids for Bach program and concert. She enjoyed many trips with friends to Europe and Asia, and she belonged to the University Women’s Club, serving on several committees and participating in the hiking and book groups for many years. She loved golf all her life and also began ballroom dancing after her retirement from CU. In addition to private lessons and local tea dances, she attended the BYU adult ballroom dance camp for several years.
She moved to Frasier Meadows in February 2020, and was very involved in music activities there, serving as piano accompanist to several musical groups. She volunteered extensively in support of her friends and neighbors at Frasier and was beloved by many.
She is survived by her brother Ben Mixon and sister-in-law Polly Mixon of Durham, NC; son Stuart Corbridge and daughter-in-law Carol Corbridge of Longmont, CO; daughter Loren Corbridge and son-in-law James Barse of Oakland, CA; and through daughter-in-law Carol, three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
