Clare was born into a farm family in Minnesota in 1927. When she was 11, they moved to a farm near Fargo in North Dakota. As a child, she helped with farm chores, participated in 4-H, played the trombone in high school, and was vice president of her senior class. After graduating, she went to business school, and from there, worked as an executive secretary at banks and legal firms. She moved to Denver as a single and met her future husband Jack Baird while he was finishing up his tour of duty at Lowry Air Force Base. They married in 1954 and moved to his home state of Illinois for him to attend college. While in Illinois, their three children, Bonnie, Jan and Jay, were born. Remembering how much they both enjoyed Colorado, the family moved back to Colorado in 1967 and lived in Boulder for many years. In both locations, they made friends in the neighborhood, at the bridge table, at church and the bowling alley.
Clare attended Mountain View United Methodist Church in Boulder for 55 years. She participated actively in the United Methodist Women chapter there (now United Women in Faith). As a mother, she supported her children in their academic pursuits, including being a room mother, typing many term papers and attending many concerts. She also worked as an administrator at the International English Center at U of C in Boulder. She hiked as a young adult, climbing Flagstaff Mountain multiple times and enjoying the Arapahoe Glacier hike. She and Jack continued to enjoy bridge and traveling. Jack and Clare visited Hawaii, Scotland, Ireland, England, and Finland, as well as frequent trips to the Midwest to keep up with family and friends.
In their later years, Jack and Clare moved to Lafayette, CO, and loved their new neighbors in the cul-de-sac. She appreciated her caregivers, both at home and after her move to Balfour Retirement Community. Clare had many lifelong friends and was close with her precious extended family members.
Clare is survived by her three children, Bonnie’s husband Glen, grandchildren Ryan and Michelle, and many nieces and nephews. The family suggests memorial gifts to either Mountain View United Methodist Church’s chapter of United Women in Faith or Disabled American Veterans (DAV).
Clare's service will be held at Mountain View United Methodist Church on April 28, 2023 at 10:30am.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.cristmortuary.com for the Baird family.
