An achiever from an early age, David earned his Eagle Scout rank before graduating from Union City High School in 1948. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Purdue in 1952.
He then served in the US Army Signal Corps where he was an electronics technician. Upon completing his service, he was employed by the Chrysler Corporation, where he designed suspension systems and also earned a master's degree from the Chrysler Institute of Engineering. While in the Detroit area, he met and married Arlene "Lynn" Avery. His education culminated by earning master's degrees and a doctorate in engineering mechanics from the University of Michigan.
After graduation, they moved to Lexington, KY where he was employed by IBM. He designed components and systems for office products such as copy machines. IBM lent engineers to universities, and he taught in the Civil Engineering Technology Department at Florida A & M University in 1972. Shortly after returning from Tallahassee, IBM moved him to Boulder in 1973. He retired from IBM in 1993.
David always worked to contribute to his family and to society. While his kids were in Jr and Sr High, he and Lynn ran the Methodist Youth Fellowship program. He and Lynn divorced in 1987. After his retirement, he volunteered for the Boulder Valley affiliate of Habitat for Humanity. He helped construct the first house they built, and upon leaving many years later, had worked on every house since then. He served as President and on the Board during his tenure. He also donated his time and expertise to the University of Colorado's Minority Engineering Program by tutoring technical subjects such as chemistry, chemical engineering, thermodynamics, physics, and mathematics.
David was a member of Mountain View United Methodist church for nearly 50 years, and held many roles including singing in the choir, running the youth group, and chairing the Staff Parish Relations committee. He was also a multi-gallon blood donor.
He is survived by his wife Joel, whom he knew as a young boy in Union City and married in 1989. He is also survived by his former wife Lynn, brother Al (Bobby), his three children, Mike (Maureen), Steve (Yang), and Brenda (Greg) and by his five grandchildren Matt, Mark, Laurel, Tessa, and Ted. In lieu of flowers, please volunteer or donate to your favorite charity.
