

Gordon Anton Mickelson passed away peacefully on August 27, 2011 at his home in the Meridian in Boulder, CO with family members by his side. Gordon was born on a farm outside of Deerfield, Wisconsin on June 29, 1916. He graduated 2nd in his class from Deerfield High School, followed by BS degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin in 1939. After college he moved to Denver and met Rosanna Leinweber, his wonderful wife of 56 years. He was a WWII veteran. During the war he was instrumental in setting up the communications for the Yalta Conference in Russia where he got the inside view of Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill. After the war Gordon had an interesting 30-year career with the FAA. His job involved maintaining radar communications for the Air Traffic Controllers. He also worked on the Berlin Airlift.
Gordon retired when he was 55 and spent his time skiing, traveling the world with his wife Rosanna, and going to classes and seminars. He skied until he was 85, traveled to 86 counties and never stopped learning. He will be remembered for his intelligence, curiosity, kindness, honesty and support for his family. Gordon lived a great life and was an excellent role model to all. He maintained his desire to learn and enthusiasm for life until the end.
Gordon is survived by his daughters Nanci Nelson of Tucson, AZ and Sylvia (Stan) South of Boulder, CO. He also has three grandchildren: Paul South of Boulder, Jen (Michael) Caines of Sydney, Australia and Gordon (Sara) South of Phoenix, AZ. Gordon also has three great-grandchildren: Kaia Caines and Alondra and Noe South. His relatives in Wisconsin will miss him. Gordon’s sister Margaret and brother Sid Mickelson of Madison, Wisconsin preceded him in death.
A memorial celebrating his life will be held at the home of Stan and Sylvia South on September 3, 2011 at 11AM, followed by a luncheon. All are welcome.
