Janice Maria Stubenrauch passed away on June 9, 2024, in Longmont, Colorado, following a brief illness. She was born on April 8, 1941 to Adolf and Maria (Schleef) Koester in Watseka, Illinois. She grew up on the family farm outside Watseka. She later moved to Champaign, Illinois, where she worked as an Executive Secretary in the office of the Dean of Agriculture at the University of Illinois. Jan met Carl Stubenrauch at the University Lutheran Chapel in Champaign, where she served as organist, and they were married on August 28, 1965.
Jan and Carl spent the early years of their marriage in Michigan, and became parents to their three children. They moved to Boulder, Colorado in 1972, and lived there until moving to Longmont in 2022. Jan was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. She enjoyed cooking and baking; she always had delicious homemade soup prepared, and over the course of her lifetime baked hundreds of thousands of cookies and thousands of loaves of bread. She also enjoyed sewing; when her children were young, she made many of their clothes, and additionally sewed a tent, sleeping bags, and jackets from Frostline kits, as well as creative Halloween costumes for her grandchildren.
Jan was an active member at Grace Lutheran Church and was a member of the quilting group for decades. Jan was an active volunteer in the community: she served on the Children’s Hospital Guild in Boulder for many years, held leadership roles in Bible Study Fellowship, and later served on the Valparaiso University Guild chapter in Boulder. Jan also regularly drove cancer patients to Denver for treatment; her kind, nurturing manner no doubt helped set them as much at ease as possible at a difficult time.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Carl Stubenrauch of Longmont; her three children, Maria Derrick (Wes) of Palo Alto, California, Anna Carter (Matt) of Longmont, Colorado, and Peter Stubenrauch (Sarah) of Golden, Colorado, and her six grandchildren, Caleb and Rosie Carter, Leah and Rebecca Derrick, and Henry and Maddie Stubenrauch, as well as her brother, Roy Koester (Donna) of Watseka, Illinois, her sister-in-law and brother-in-law Katherine and Gordon Day of Boulder, Colorado, her nephews, Paul Koester (Cindy) of River Forest, Illinois and Andrew Day (Becky) of Lafayette, Colorado, and niece, Sarah Day-O’Connell (Jeremy) of Saratoga Springs, New York.
A funeral will be held Friday, June 21, 2024, 10:00 a.m., at Grace Lutheran Church, 1001 13th Street, Boulder, Colorado. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Grace Lutheran Foundation (1001 13th Street, Boulder, CO 80302) or Valparaiso University Guild (guild.valpo.edu)
