Joyce Valerie Peterson

Joyce passed away on July 4, 2012 with her daughters at her bedside. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Nelan (2005); and is survived by her daughters Darla Peterson Broshar, Camille Peterson (McSweeney) and Patricia Peterson, her granddaughter Dani Broshar and her brother Wesley Duane Dunlap. Her parents also preceded her in death, Keith Garner Dunlap (1992) and Esther Larson Dunlap (1999).

Joyce was born on June 3, 1933 in Lemmon, South Dakota. She was the daughter of a rancher and a school teacher and graduated from high school in McIntosh, South Dakota. She was a gifted musician and attended Girls State as a representative of her local community. She attended college at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota. While a student there, she met a Navy Veteran named Nelan Peterson and they were married in July 1955. Joyce taught elementary education in South Dakota prior to giving birth to her twin daughters.

Joyce was a homemaker and active member of Atonement Lutheran Church with choir, women's circles and other church events. She loved music, baking and her family. Her laughter and joy will be missed by all that knew her.

A memorial service honoring her life will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, July 9, 2012 at Crist Mortuary Chapel. A reception will be held at Crist following the service.
