Louis John Pistone

Born on August 1, 1931 in Omaha, NE, Lou was the youngest son of Italian immigrant parents, Innocenzio Pistone (Tony), his father, and his mother Sebastiana Gagliolo, (Nellie Pistone), both from Carlentini, (Siracusa) Sicily. He grew up in Little Italy Omaha where he attended Central High School, and Creighton University.

Lou was a modest, kind-hearted man whose life was defined by service, integrity, and a deep appreciation for the world around him. A decorated Army officer and retired Lt Colonel in the 1st Infantry Division, he served his country with honor and distinction throughout a long and dedicated military career. After retiring from active duty, he embraced his lifelong passions—travel and the outdoors—with the same commitment and enthusiasm he brought to his service. He especially loved exploring the mountains and trails of Colorado and Europe, often returning to places he had first seen during his military travels. Whether hiking through the Rockies or walking along alpine paths abroad, he found great joy in nature’s beauty and shared that joy with his family and friends. His gentle leadership, unwavering kindness, and quiet strength left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

He is survived by his daughter Catherine Pistone Cooper, her husband Ben Cooper (Coop) of Boulder, Colorado, along with his adored nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mercedes Pistone, along with his parents, brothers Angelo Pistone and Fred Pistone; sister, Sarah Pistone; sisters-in-law, Betty Pistone, Andrea Curran; brothers-in-law, Denis McGuire, James Curran; nephews Jim Grassau, Kevin McGuire, Mathew McGuire; and niece Patricia Moyer.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 16, 2025 at 9am, at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, CO.

In lieu of flowers, please gather your favorite people and get outside! • plant a tree, go hiking, or better yet, buy a cheap plane ticket and travel somewhere new. Lou’s best advice was, ‘buy that plane ticket- your budget is your budget whether you visit California, Italy, or Ireland. Get out and see the world’!
