Mark Joseph Carey, age 28, passed away in his Boulder, Colorado home on October 10, 2011. He was born in Denville, New Jersey, lived in Hampshire, England from 1987 to 1992, and in the Clear Lake area of Houston, Texas through high school.
After attending the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Colorado, he settled in Boulder until his passing.
In spite of a neurological disorder that resulted in severe sleep difficulties and that resisted various treatments, Mark remained a kind, giving and loving man; he was a gentle soul who cared deeply about his family and friends. He enjoyed spending time in the outdoors, in particular hiking Grizzly Peak in Colorado and Croagh Patrick in Ireland. He mastered the art of making green smoothies and enjoyed finding ways in which to improve his health.
Mark is survived by his parents, Joseph and Gerlinde Carey of Houston, Texas and his sister and brother-in-law, Christine and David Wilkerson of Ypsilanti, Michigan. He is also survived by his maternal grandmother, Helga Sahm, of Ratingen, Germany and his close friends who have been in his heart and loyal to each other since junior high school.
Visitation and service arrangements are being handled by Crist Mortuary of Boulder, Colorado. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 pm on Monday, October 17, 2011 followed by a short service at 4pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations in his name to the Humane Society of Boulder Valley or the Boulder Shambhala Meditation Center, both of which can be accessed online for donation instructions. There will be a gathering for friends and family in Houston, Texas after the family returns in a few weeks.
