

Mark Read passed away in Boulder, Colorado on January 11, 2022, from heart complications.
Mark was born in Quincy, MA to Mark Lowell and Evelyn Read. He graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 1954 and served in the US Marine Corps 1955-1959. He resided in Boulder for nearly 26 years. He was a vital, vibrant man whose loss will be felt by loved ones around the globe.
Mark is survived by his partner Judy Richtel of Boulder; ex-wife Patricia Mary Read, son Mark, daughters Kristin (Joe Wagenbach) and Erin, and daughter-in-law Janie (Mike Hart), of Rhode Island. He cherished his grandchildren “JP” and Read Ruddick, and Mark Daylan, Jabin and Liam Read.
Mark converted to Judaism in 1995. He lived his faith in his commitment to justice, healing the world, and kindness. Mark was active in Boulder’s restorative justice program and in efforts to support the homeless.
The Marines gave to Mark self-discipline, an opportunity to serve and a love for living abroad. These were signatures of his life thereafter.
From 1960 to 1992, Mark served as a CIA intelligence officer in Latin America, Europe and Vietnam, operating in a Non-Official (undercover) capacity. He began his career with the equivalent rank of Sergeant and retired as a Major General. He served with admirable and effective patriots.
After retirement from the Agency, Mark directed corporate investigations in Latin America for Kroll Associates. Subsequently, he ran an independent, security consultancy based in/out of Panama. Mark pursued his commitment to helping others by concentrating on due diligences and responding to kidnappings.
Avocations included: rooting for the Boston Celtics; playing sports; making Judy laugh; running with the bulls in Pamplona 17 times; sharing jokes with friends; reading; and acting. Mark was part of theater groups in Uruguay, Spain, Viet Nam, Venezuela, Portugal, the Bahamas, and Miami. Most recently he has been a pillar of the VIVA theater troupe of Boulder, Colorado. A highlight of Mark’s acting experiences was staging a one-man play at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland.
