

MICHAEL C. SCHULTZ, 89, died peacefully during the night on Monday, November 14, 2011 in Broomfield, Colorado. Michael C. was the first-born to German immigrants Michael Gottlieb Schultz and Katherine Elizabeth Diedrichs Schultz in Lamberton, Minnesota on February 1, 1922. Surviving immediate family include his wife of 46 years, Katherine Elizabeth Kusik Schultz; children, Michael Paul Schultz of Sunnyvale, California; Dr. John Frank Schultz of Snowmass Village, Colorado; and Katherine Elizabeth Schultz of Snowmass Village, Colorado. Michael is also survived by three of his siblings, Roman V. Schultz of Lakeshore, Minnesota; Rita M. Weisner of Lamberton, Minnesota; and Kathleen T. Schultz Baptista of Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
Michael graduated from Lamberton High School and the University of Minnesota, where he earned a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering degree. During his engineering career in petrochemicals he was employed by Commercial Solvents Corporation, Libbey-Owens-Ford Company (Corrulux Division,) Petro-Tex Chemical Corporation, Austin-Rankin Corporation, The Lummus Company, and most recently, Fluor Corporation, from which he retired as Project Engineer. He was a Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Texas for 45 years, and a lifetime member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
Michael was a veteran of World War II having volunteered for induction with the U.S. Navy prior to graduation from college. His enlisted rank was Seaman First Class (Radar Technician) when he was transferred to the Midshipman program. He was commissioned Ensign USNR at Columbia University in New York City for Deck Officer Duty. He was assigned to duty aboard USS Badoeng Strait (CVE 116) in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre in the Gunnery department and stood Deck Officer Watches. He participated in the U.S. Naval Reserve until he was honorably discharged after 18 years of Satisfactory Service with the rank of Lieutenant.
Michael was a licensed airplane pilot and an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, and camping with friends and family. He also took pleasure in scuba diving and playing tennis. Michael loved snow skiing in the mountains of Colorado as a young man, and later shared this love with his family, teaching his children to ski.
The visitation will be held on Monday, November 21st from 5-7pm at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lafayette, Colorado, with a Rosary service at 6pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, November 22nd at 10am, also at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lafayette, Colorado, with a reception immediately following. The burial ceremony will take place after the reception at Fort Logan National Cemetery for Veterans in Denver, Colorado at 1:15pm staging area C. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to HospiceCare of Boulder and Broomfield Counties at www.hospicecareonline.org so that other families can receive the same compassionate care at end-of-life.
