Morris Cohn, 69, died on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at The Reserve at Balfour, in Louisville. As typical of his tenacious spirit, he fought a long, courageous battle against Alzheimer’s disease.
Morris was born in Denver on October 24, 1940, and lived most of his adult life in Boulder. While growing up, he spent his summers at Camp Nebagamon in the north woods of Wisconsin. He graduated from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
Morris started his career working for The Denver Agency insurance company that his father, Norman Cohn, founded. In 1969 he quit his job to go to India and study with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, where he became a teacher of Transcendental Meditation (TM). He spent the next several decades teaching more than 1000 people to meditate and dedicating his life to spiritual development. A man ahead of his time, in 1970 Morris founded The Grainary in Denver, one of the first natural food stores in Colorado. He worked as a realtor and real estate investor the last 20 years of his working life.
Morris had a passion for Vedic studies, traveling to India, fishing, and for listening to music, which helped get him through the years of his illness. He was an avid gardener and had an encyclopedic knowledge of history and political science. But most of all, he was a gentle soul whose joyful spirit touched everyone he came in contact with. He will be greatly missed by his beloved family and many friends.
A few years ago when he was asked what it was like living with Alzheimer’s disease he responded, “In this life I’m doing the best I can and I’ll continue to with friends and family. I want to be treated like any other human being. My message to others is try to find your own happiness and do the best you can.”
Morris is survived by his wife, Barbra; his 3 children: Bobette Cohn, Ari and his wife Ronit Cohn, and Hillary Cohn Aizenman and her husband Daniel Aizenman; brother Amertat Cohn and his wife Julia; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Jeff and Anne Levine; mother-in-law Thelma Levine; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, September 2, at Crist Mortuary, 3395 Penrose Pl., Boulder, CO 80301. (303) 442-4411.
