Ralph was born November 21, 1965 in Manhattan, Kansas but promptly moved to Boulder before he was a year old. He was a true “Boulderite,” attending Eisenhower Elementary, Burbank Jr. High and Fairview High Schools, playing the trombone in the Fairview Knights Marching Band. Ralph’s first work experience was at the historic Red Lion Inn up Boulder Canyon where he worked during summers through his high school years. He pursued his love for cooking at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. After doing an internship in Switzerland, he worked as chef at the California Club in LA, and at the Grand Floridian Resort in Disney World. Ralph worked in the restaurant industry over 20 years and then made a career change to working as an IT Specialist at several companies in the Boulder area including Maxtor, Seagate, Solar Winds and lastly at IBM.
Ralph had a special love for people, food and music. He was a big-hearted, friendly guy to everyone he met. He had an easy laugh that made you feel like he was “with you.” Ralph was loyal – some of his best friends are from elementary school. He was forthright – “What you see is what you get.”
His love for food began when he was a youngster making the family eat his “green eggs and ham” (more than once). He loved creating with flavors and having family and friends try his new concoctions. He would help “amend” his sister-in-law’s gravy at every family gathering (with a very sweet spirit). One of Ralph’s foodie favorites were the “zuchs & shrooms” at the Dark Horse.
He loved Boulder, music and KBCO. He would wait in line every year for the KBCO Studio C music CD’s. He was proud to be an Eagle Scout and of his German heritage travelling many times to see family in Germany.
Ralph is survived by his parents Bill and Heide Picker of Boulder, his brother Rob (Gay) Superior, his nephew and niece Michael (Jessica) and Katie Picker (Montana and Louisville), family from Germany, France and St. Louis, and many, many friends. You will be missed, Ralph. We love you.
A memorial service will be held for Ralph at Crist Mortuary, 3395 Penrose Pl, Boulder, 80301 on Friday, June 24th at 2 pm. Reception to follow. Donations in Ralph’s honor can be made at: www.communityfoodshare.org
