Remembering Sara -
Sara “Sally” Chandler Hostelley was born in 1939 and raised in Cleveland, Ohio along with her brother Doug by her parents Frankie and Lynn.
One of her favorite family memories of growing up in Cleveland was traveling to visit her Grandfather on Sundays. Lynn would drive the car and the whole family would sing songs and tell stories all along the way. Later in high school Sara dived into the arts and athletics playing volleyball, basketball and cheer leading for both the football and basketball team.
She was close with Barbara Hostelley, Ken's sister, her high school classmate where she met Ken 2 years her junior and Barbara played matchmaker. Sara and Ken dated as he finished high school and married in his sophomore year at Purdue University. While Ken studied, Sara worked for the University where she pushed the threshold quickly being recognized for her people and organizational skills and was named the first female Conference Coordinator at Purdue University. When Ken graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Sara was pregnant with Ben, running out of money and Dupont came to the rescue offering Ken a job in Circleville Ohio as an Engineer.
In Circleville she had a second child, Paul. With 2 young children and a hard working husband she amazingly found the time to design, build and decorate a home which won several awards and the “Hand Print Bathroom” was a unique hit. To fuel her interest in art, she started a Antique Printers Block business creating furniture, family names and other items.
Ken's career progressed and a promotion relocated the family to New Jersey. Sara explored the east coast traveling to New York City for the first time, vacationing at the Jersey shore with family and friends and enjoyed sports and the social aspects of the Village Swim Club. While in New Jersey she learned her brother was courageously fighting multiple sclerosis and Sara used all of her special talents to create a fun filled carnival to raise a lot of money for MS.
Dupont brought the family to Delaware where the family settled in with the boys attending school, playing sports and being a typical suburban family. Making dinner and packing lunches was not Sara’s thing instead focusing on meeting the community, playing sports and ultimately continuing her education completing her Bachelors in Fine Arts at the University of Delaware.
The days were fun, routine and stable for the family until one day DuPont offered Ken the opportunity to bring his skills and talents to Japan. Ken and Sara decided this was an adventure of a lifetime and decided to move to Tokyo. The family helped Ben to settle in at Elon College before selling the house, storing its belongings and packing everything else they would need for the next 5 years into 28 pieces of luggage. In Japan, Sara flourished settling the family and quickly exploring the culture and city while meeting new friends. Trips to Korea, Thailand, Hong Kong to explore the region before finding her passion being an apprentice to a master papermaker learning how to hand make paper and Japanese screens.
Five years later it was time to move forward again with Dupont this time to Geneva, Switzerland. Europe offered Sara a new environment to explore and conquer. Hiking, Skiing in the mountains and weekend excursions to different countries with Ken were enjoyable. Paris, London, Prague, Italy and lots of visitors including her boys during the holidays led to many travel adventures.
One more big move waited ahead, this time to New Delhi India. Again, the people, culture and arts excited her finding pleasure in collecting textiles, hosting magnificent parties and meeting with many local art and crafts people. Her passion to explore arts and crafts encouraged her to travel the country extensively, which can be challenging, led her to the Taj Mahal, Rambach Palace and Darmshala where she sat with the Dalai Lama.
Ken’s time with DuPont winds down with Sara and Ken returning to Delaware to begin transitioning to the retired life together. Sara spent her time making her final palace transitioning a normal house into her vision of a home with accents and touches from her collections she had accumulated on her trips around the world. Sara continued exploring her passion for the arts practicing rangoli which she learned in India, Ikebana which she learned in Japan and singing with the Circle Singers to name just a few of her interest. The final touch on Boulder Road was the addition of her place of sanctuary fondly known as her Yurt. A place for Sara to continue her interest in holistic health, yoga, exercise, meditation and a place for her to meet with friends.
Clowning became a passion and Anna Banana appeared and appealed to her circle. Mummers Parades, travel to different countries to help the poor, hospitals, children's festivals, assisted living facilities and her favorite parties spreading the message of laughter, joy and happiness.
As the family learned of her diagnosis with frontotemporal dementia, we better understood her passion and commitment to organizing all of the families photos, creating a timeline of her life and memory books for her boys. Ken lovingly cared for Sara in the home she had created until the time came when more family support was needed deciding to leave Delaware to relocate Sara to a wonderful and new assisted living facility in the heart of Boulder, CO minutes from Ben and a lifestyle she had always wanted.
She was a star and know by all as Sara “Sally” at the Carillon. New trails and paths to explore just like those in Circleville, New Jersey, Wilmington, Japan, Switzerland and India were her passion. Each day with Ken by her side a new journey began and they would go out walking. Frequently Ben would join and special visits from Paul from California would make her smile with joy.
Her life was an adventure and we are thankful to all of those who shared in her energy and love of life. She leaves behind a path of happiness, deep friendships, love for her husband and family and many happy memories for all of us.
A life deserving of a standing ovation!!
