Known to many as “Milt,” he was born in Saltillo, Mississippi (north of Tupelo) on March 21, 1932. When he was ten years old, he moved with his family to Memphis, Tennessee; he later joined and avidly participated in Boy Scout Troop 97 (Ole 97). He attended Southside High School where he began dating Elizabeth (Liz) Lincoln and participated in Air Force ROTC and the Tennessee National Guard. Following graduation, he served from 1951 to 1952 as a supply sergeant on a military base near Tokyo, Japan during the Korean War.
After returning to Memphis, he married Liz on Nov. 27, 1952. They left Memphis in 1955 to attend the University of Tennessee in Knoxville to earn bachelor’s degrees before going on to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for their master’s degrees – Milt’s in electrical engineering and Liz’s in home economics.
Following graduation, Milt accepted a job in 1960 with IBM in Lexington, Kentucky. All three of their children – Lisa Ruth, Bruce Thomas, and Paul Milton – were born there. They were active members of Immanuel Baptist Church on Tates Creek Road. In 1974, the family moved to Boulder, Colorado, where IBM was relocating its printer division. Along with other families, the Hallmark family helped establish East Boulder Baptist Church on Baseline Road.
In 1990, Milton and Liz transferred with IBM to Tucson, Arizona, and became members of the El Camino Baptist Church on Speedway Blvd. Soon after moving, Liz was diagnosed with cancer, which she courageously fought until her passing on Jan. 2, 2000. In 2001, Milt married Barbara (Bly) Lipsey Youngblood, the widow of Ed Youngblood, Milt’s best friend in high school and scouts. The two of them resided in Tucson until 2019 when Milton’s health necessitated a move to AltaVita Memory Care Centre in Longmont.
Milt is survived by his wife, Barbara; his three adult children: Lisa (Kirk) Gaskins of Erie, CO, Bruce (Beth) Hallmark of Fort Collins, CO, and Paul (Alejandra) Hallmark of Longmont, CO; and his two sisters Patricia (David) Bumpus of Nesbit, MS, and Barbara (Patrick) Emerson of Memphis, TN. Milt had seven grandchildren: Tim (Michelle) Gaskins, Laura (Joey) Spinella, David (Sara) Gaskins, Brianna Hallmark, John Paul Hallmark, Luke Hallmark, and Nathan Hallmark, as well as three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service for Milt will be held Wednesday, May 4, 2022 at 10:15 AM at Ft. Logan National Cemetery, 4400 W. Kenyon Ave., Denver, CO 80236. Following the graveside service will be a memorial service at 2:00 PM at Calvary Bible Church, 615 Evans Street, Erie, CO 80516.
