Alvin Gene Glenn, 86, of Bradenton, Florida, formerly of New Lothrop, Michigan, passed away on November 23, 2024, peacefully with his loving wife and youngest daughter at his side. He was a wonderful man who lived fully for the year and a half after his cancer diagnosis, facing his illness with the determination, reliability and stubbornness he demonstrated his entire life.
Survived by his wife Lorraine; daughters and son-in-laws, Dianne and Denny Henige, Dawn and Tim Lutes, Dana and Eric Emmendorfer; brother, Bob (Marti) Glenn; sister, Shirley Ainsworth; sister-in-laws, Carol Glenn, Marlene Duncan, Sherri Perry; and brother-in-law, Dan Ridenour. He leaves behind a large legacy of 7 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his parents, James and Isabelle Glenn; brothers, Jim, Hugh, Larry, and Don Glenn; sister, Skipper Glenn; and grandson, Jonathon Emmendorfer.
Al was born on April 10, 1938 in Ann Arbor, Michigan to James Ira Glenn and Isabelle Spare Glenn. He was the fifth of eight children. He graduated from Brighton High School in 1956.
Al met the love of his life, Lorraine Ridenour, in March of 1958. The lovebirds married after a whirlwind romance reminiscent of fairy tales on June 6, 1959. Al and Lori settled in Brighton where they had three daughters, and Al worked as an inspector for Buhr in Ann Arbor. In 1971, Al and his family moved to New Lothrop. He and Lori purchased the New Lothrop Tavern which they ran as a family business for 27 years, before retiring and traveling, and eventually settling in Bradenton.
Al will be remembered as a friendly, helpful, talented man, even if he appeared a bit grumpy on the surface. His life was a testament to the care he felt for those around him. He was a long term volunteer firefighter with the Hazelton Township Fire Department, and hosted events for many years that collected items for Toys for Tots.
An extremely talented and inventive woodworker, Al created beautiful pieces to share with those around him. He could often be found in his workshop creating gizmos for Lori, building toys or other items for his children and grandchildren, turning random pieces of wood into works of art, or helping others improve their homes.
Al enjoyed the beauty of nature. He found joy in walks in the woods, mushroom hunting, fishing, kayaking, birding, and watching the sunset on the beach. He always preferred to
take the side roads to enjoy the beautiful scenery. He also enjoyed traveling, drawing, coin collecting, puzzles, playing cards, and a cold Budweiser.
Al found joy in community. A longtime member of the Michigan Licensed Beverage Association where he served as the executive director of Shiawassee county. He sponsored baseball and softball teams in the New Lothrop and Chesaning areas. Watching these teams play with his family was a joy. His door was always open for a visitor or a friend or someone who didn’t have anywhere else to be on a holiday.
Most of all Al will be remembered as a loving man who supported his family in whatever way was needed. He was a loving, proud, and devoted husband, dad, grandpa, and papa, and his family will miss him forever.
His family will host a celebration of his life sometime next summer, and will share details widely. In lieu of flowers, please send all tributes to the “wishes of the family.”
