Dr. Angelo Anaclerio of Longboat Key Florida passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Wednesday, July 26th, 2023. Born in Chicago, IL on March 28, 1936, Dr. Anaclerio graduated from the University of Florida in 1958 and the University of Florida Medical School in 1962. His medical residency took place at The University of Wisconsin where he specialized in Ophthalmology. After his residency, he enlisted in the Air Force, where he served as Chief of Ophthalmology as a captain stationed in Ankara, Turkey. Upon his return to the United States in 1967, he completed his residency at George Washington University and became an instructor.
Two years later, hearing that there was a need for an Ophthalmologist in Danville, IL, Dr. Anaclerio returned to his Illinois roots and started his Ophthalmology practice there, and over the years expanded to Watseka and Gibson City. He became a nationally renowned physician for his forward-looking research in cataract surgery, and was the first physician in Danville’s history to use various lasers when they first became available in the 70’s and 80’s. He was always an innovator and researcher and was one of the developers of a cataract extraction technique that allows doctors to remove a cataract and replace it with a lens that restores almost perfect vision, a practice used by virtually all eye doctors today. Dr. Anaclerio loved his job and his patients, and when he retired in 2001, he was sorely missed by his patients and the community.
Dr. Anaclerio was well-known in Danville for his philanthropy, creating a scholarship endowment at the Danville Area Community College and supporting the Danville Public Library. In 2014, the University of Florida Medical School named him Distinguished Alumnus in recognition of his 32 years of service to the Danville community and for his contributions to the field of Ophthalmology. In keeping with his belief in the importance of education, he established the Dr. Angelo and Alberta Anaclerio Learning and Assessment Center at the UF Medical School located in the campus’s new medical education building.
Angelo loved spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling around the world, flying his Cessna, being involved with the Vermillion County Airport Authority, and spending time boating and fishing in the Bahamas.
Dr. Anaclerio is survived by his wife, Alberta Anaclerio, ex-wife Mary Anaclerio, daughters Cheri Anaclerio and Nicole Pryor, stepson Pete Charnisky, brother Leroy Anaclerio, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at Robert Toale and Sons Funeral Home at Manasota Memorial Park, 1221 53rd Avenue East, Bradenton, FL 34203 at 11:00 a.m. on August 26th, 2023.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Tidewell Hospice or The Alzheimer’s Association.
