Born on May 18, 1935, in Bradenton, Florida, to William and Rosa Mixon, Gene’s life was deeply rooted in the rich soil of Manatee County. After graduating from Manatee County High School in 1953, he dedicated a year to serving as the State President of Future Farmers of America, a testament to his early leadership and passion for agriculture. His dedication was further recognized with the prestigious American Farmers Degree at the National FFA Convention in Kansas City, Missouri.
Gene Pursued his higher education at the University of Florida, earning a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 1958, specializing in Citrus Production Management. Shortly after, he was drafted into the US Army, serving his country for two years. Upon his return, he joined Mixon Fruit Farms, Inc., where he excelled as the packinghouse manager. During this time, he played a pivotal role with the Florida Gift Fruit Shippers, serving as president for two years. His visionary leadership led to the establishment of the nationwide gift fruit delivery program in collaboration with what is now the USPS.
In 1994, Gene, alongside his sons Emory and Scott, founded The Citrus Ranch. They tirelessly operated the company until the devastating impact of citrus canker and citrus greening made continued operations overwhelmingly difficult.
In his later years, Gene faced health challenges, being declared legally blind in 2020 due to macular degeneration and later developing dementia.
Gene is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Carole (Prine) Mixon, and his loving sons, Emory and Scott (husband, Brian Wiggins). He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Palmetto.
