Beloved husband of 36 years to Mary (McMahon) Schauger. Proudest father of Jeffrey (Karen) Schauger of Grand Island, New York and Kevin (Lisa Kedron) Schauger of Marilla, NY. Devoted grandfather to Rachel (Branden) Simone and Aaron (Kirsten) Schauger. Brother-in-law to the loving McMahon family: John (Sherry) McMahon, Ed (Patricia) McMahon, and Mark (Sharon) McMahon. Born September 18, 1936 to the late Louis Schauger and the late Blanche Decker, and half-brother of the late James (late Carole) Schauger and the late Jeanne (late Joseph) Dyrek. Survived by two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Richard was a United States Army veteran, having served at Fort Richardson, Alaska. He subsequently earned his college degree from the University of Buffalo, attending night classes and achieving high honors.
Richard was employed and retired from National Fuel Gas, headquartered in Buffalo, New York, where he worked his way up from an entry-level position to Director of Security and Revenue Recovery over a 37-year career. He was a prominent member of numerous trade organizations and held key leadership roles in several.
Sports were a big part of Richard’s long and distinguished life. He enjoyed golf and was an active high school basketball and soccer referee for many years, as well as a baseball umpire. His support for the Buffalo Bills as a season-ticket holder dates to the 1960’s, and that passion has been passed on to his sons and grandchildren. Sports and the Bills are an important part of their lives as a result.
The family wishes to express thanks to the many nurses, therapists, and thoughtful friends who so generously provided care and support during Richard’s last weeks.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday February 20th at 10:00 am at OUR LADY QUEEN OF MATYRS CHURCH at 833 Magellan Drive, Sarasota, followed by a military funeral at SARASOTA NATIONAL CEMETERY, 9810 State Road 72, Sarasota.
