AD devoted his working life to the community he called home, giving his time with steady pride and a deeply practical sense of responsibility. He was employed by Sandyston Township for 25 years and retired in 2013 as the Public Works Director. His commitment to service also extended far beyond a job title, reflecting a man who believed in showing up, pitching in, and doing the work that needed to be done.
A familiar and respected presence in Sandyston, AD’s life was closely tied to the fire service and to the people alongside whom he served. He dedicated 52 years to the Sandyston Fire Department, including 25 years as chief. He was a life member of the New Jersey State Firemen's Association and served as the Warden for the State of New Jersey Forest Fire Service. In addition, AD worked with Sandyston Township in the planning and construction of the Municipal Building and Fire Department—an enduring reflection of his hands-on approach and his willingness to volunteer his effort where it mattered most.
Outside of his public service, AD enjoyed the simple satisfactions of time well spent. A collector of many items—hats among them—he also took pleasure in restoring motors. He valued companionship and conversation, often enjoying time with friends at the barn on his property. And when the day grew quiet, he found peace watching the hummingbirds on his back deck.
AD is survived by his wife, Laura Roberts Delea; daughters, Amanda Mack (Robert) and Ashley Conklin (Khyle); sister, Judith Lipscomb; step-son, Richard Decker; step-son, Jake Decker (Kristy); step-daughter, Jen Decker (Andrew); and lifelong best friend, Dave Coss. He is also survived by eight grandchildren who called him "Pop Buddy," Kassidy, Carlynn, Colin, Rylee, Allison, Jordyn, Hayden and Cole; six step-grandchildren Isabella, Alana, Lucas, Abigail, Grace and Rylee; two great-grandchildren Nolan and Raegan.
He was preceded in death by his father, Garrett Delea; mother, Shirley Delea; brothers, Robert Delea, Louis Delea, David Delea, and John Delea; and sisters, Patricia Delea Bird.
