Gladys Audrey Earley (nee Spangenberg), age 99, passed away peacefully at the home of John and Gail Earley in Branchville, NJ on Friday, July 22, 2022. Born in Sparta, NJ to John and Paulene Spangenberg, Gladys was predeceased by her loving siblings, Anna, Herberta, and Alfred.
Gladys' first employment was at the confectionary counter at Macy's Department Store in New York City, and she sang at Carnegie Hall with the Macy Choir. During World War II she was employed at Picatinny Arsenal. After the war she worked in advertising at the New Jersey Herald where she met her husband, the late Eugene Allen Earley. Through her 99 years she was also a mail carrier in Sparta, NJ, ran the employee child care service at Newton Memorial Hospital and drove the Sussex County Library Bookmobile. Very active throughout her life, she enjoyed painting and singing in local vocal groups, loved horses, roller-bladed in her 80s, drove until she was 91 and could tell you the name and model of every motor vehicle on the road. She read books and wrote in her journal every day until days before her passing.
She is survived by two sons, John (Gail) of Branchville, NJ and Morgan (Irene) of Flemington, NJ. She has six grandchildren, Jessica, Robert, Ryan, Erin, Jason and Mark, and was loved by twelve great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life for Gladys will be held at a later date.
