Phil was born to Mandy and George Day in Stroud OK on September 20, 1932. He was the second of 5 children. The family migrated to Winters CA as part of the dustbowl generation. Phil met his lovely and loving wife Mertie in Oakland, and were married May 10, 1957. The couple had two sons, and made their home in Brentwood, then Byron for the past 50 years.
Phil enjoyed working at Lawrence Livermore Lab for 30 years, but his true love was being with his family, and faithfully serving his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Phil was a faithful member of Brentwood Bible Fellowship the past 49 years, most of these as a deacon. He also served with The Gideon’s International for the better part of 5 decades.
When Phil wasn’t busy with family, church, work, visiting the sick in hospital, or simply giving of himself to those he knew and loved, he enjoyed being an avid gardener and fisherman.
Phil is survived by his wife Mertie and their son Jeff and daughter in law Amy of Bainbridge Island WA, son Clark of Lakeport, grandson Phil, his partner Melody Dawson, great granddaughter Eden, granddaughter Rachel and great granddaughter Rozlyn, all of Lakeport. Of his siblings he is survived by his older brother Ken of Hayward, and was preceded in death by his brothers Ira and Jerry, and his sister Zelda.
In lieu of flowers, Phil requested donations be made to The Gideon’s International.
A celebration of Phil’s life and a “graduation service” will be held at Brentwood Bible Fellowship in Brentwood at 3415 Walnut Blvd, on Thursday January 31 at 6:30pm.
