NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - George M. "Buster" Young, Jr. age 71, was carried into heaven by our Saviour LORD JESUS on Sunday, July 16, 2023. He was born on February 8, 1952 in Nashville, Tennessee, to the late George M. Young, Sr. & Jean Marie (Hobbs) Young. He is preceded in death by his Grandparents , Orville & Marie (Jones) Young, Grandparents, Harry K. & Margaret (Griffin) Hobbs, Uncle & Aunt, Jack & Kate Husband, Aunt Geraldine "Jerre" (Hobbs) Morton, formerly Jinnette. He is survived by his loving wife Sandra "Sandy" Faye (Witt) Young, Stepdaughter Rana Owen, Stepdaughter Susan Olivia Stovall (husband Chis) and two grandchildren, his loving and beloved brother Jon S. Young, beloved cousins Jack Hunter Husband, Eddie Mac Husband, Teresa (Jinnette ) Jones, Harry Scott Jinnette (dec.), wife Saundra, and their families.
Being the largest baby born for that period, almost ten pounds, a national Newspaper highlighted his newborn picture with the caption "Look at this buster!" The Vanderbilt attending nurses started calling him Buster and the name stuck. He proudly wore the nickname like a banner all his days!
Buster lived a "Life Well Lived!" He had the "Winners" attitude all his life! Each day Buster rose with a Caveat Emptor attitude. He sought to "seize the day," every day. We are all challenged in different ways. It became obvious that Buster's challenges would be physical traumas and illnesses throughout his life. From a boy, Buster endured a broken wrist, ruptured calf muscle, over six hours in the emergency room from a bicycle accident, a severed right arm, his right knee split into in a head-on traffic accident, many other injuries and illnesses and finally Metastatic Colon Cancer. Yet, through it all, he never complained, never felt "sorry for himself." He woke each day with a smile and said, "let's get to work!" He was, and will always be, his brother's HERO!
Buster was a Strong Man, strong in faith, greatly loving and trusting our LORD JESUS, strong in love, loving his family and friends, his classmates and nation, passionately! Buster was strong spiritually, emotionally, mentally, physically and especially, in character. If he counted you his friend, you had the best friend you could ever have! HE WILL BE GREATLY MISSED UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN!!!
Buster proudly graduated from John Overton Senior High School, attended Belmont University (Business), Nashville State Technical College (Computer Sciences) and ITT Technical Institute (Computer Sciences). Buster was enrolled in a Developmental Learning program in Elementary School (5th and 6th Grades) and was tested at Vanderbilt University as having an almost genius IQ. This gift came to fruition when he found his "best self" when encouraged by a friend to learn Computer programming in the late '70's. At the time Buster was "home-bound" for nearly three years in recovery from, at the time, experimental surgery that saved the use of his right arm (automobile accident). Buster held a 4.0 avg. in computer Programming. And being recognized for his scholastic achievement, was accorded membership into The Gamma Beta Phi Society, March 12, 1981.
Buster combined his great love for all things "motor sports" with all things "computers"! Buster excelled in managing a large Exxon Service Center. Then with his great knowledge of tires, became involved with a large Commercial Tire Distributorship, becoming the Sales Leader in the Southeastern United States for Bridgestone Tire Corp. (contest prize was a trip for two to see the NFL Pro Bowl in Hawaii!). All the while, for over twenty years, Buster maintained his own lucrative Racing Tire business. Working often to midnight, he shipped tires all over the country. And, is fondly remembered as "The Slick Man" by racing teams and racers, to this day! Buster was widely known as an expert on what is known as "Slicks" used on Drag Racing cars and Bikes. Goodyear Tire Company engineers and racers as far away as Germany would call and consult Buster to glean his knowledge of the tires and individual "drag Strips" to be raced. Racers will do almost anything to "shave" a fraction of a second off their time! His knowledge was originally gained for his own interest. Buster and his close friend Jeff Barr, with help of dearest of friends, Master Mechanic Jerry Singleton championed their own Race Team, holding "time" in the top three slot in the country, for a period. Family time curtailed his racing in later years. Buster, "never to let the grass grow under his feet," began to assist his brother Jon in his Real Estate practice. The two brothers greatly enjoyed working together up to the end!
The family would like to thank Dr. Lester Porter III, Dr. Kent Shih and all the wonderful and caring nurses and staff of Tennessee Oncology (Ascension Saint Thomas West), Dr. Mark Pilkinton, Charge Nurse Katie and all the nurses and Care Partners of 7b, Ascension Saint Thomas West Medical Center. You are angels! Great gratitude is extended to Robert J. Notestine III esq. for his unparalleled support, The caring staff of Brentwood and Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton funeral Homes, and, with "love that abounds" for all our family, friends, neighbors, classmates, Church Family and business associates for the hundreds, if not thousands of prayers for Buster, the doctors and our family. These prayers have been felt! Thank you all!
