I know we have never met before but your light is shinning all over the great work I get to see everyday at my job.

Before Greg lived in Tennessee, he and his mother, Father and sister lived in Michigan. My Mother Virginia Boyko and Greg’s Father Owen Motley are brother and sister. We lived about 20 minutes from each other and would visit often. 

Greg and I would always play baseball and talk about the Detroit Tigers Baseball Team. Very few games were on TV so you listened on the radio. I remember Greg had a little electric car that he could drive that was something back in the 1960’s!! We would play board games I think he liked to play the games Sorry and Monopoly.

Greg liked to visit the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan which has old cars, trains and old homes of famous people. When Greg was young he knew all the United States Presidents and would tell me something about each one. I thought that was great I recall he was only about 10 years old. 

Before we had Theme Parks, we had something called Bob-Lo Island, you would take large ferry boat to an Island that had rides and games. I recall he liked the Dodgem cars. 

I can remember when I found out he and his family were moving from Michigan to Tennessee how sad I was, he was not only my cousin but he was also my friend. My Aunt Jo told me when Greg came home from school, he took the For Sale sign down from the lawn, he didn’t want to move to Tennessee.

Back then we had no cell phones, computers, central air conditioning, or color TV. If you wanted to make a phone call it would be long distance and the phone company charged you quite of bit of money, so most of your communication was with letters. My mother Virginia would write to my aunts and then give me the news.

Greg worked at a Country Club, playing golf, buying professional golf clubs. He purchased a Triumph TR6 car and I had the same car! 

Greg was always a joy to be around a very kind and gentle soul he will be truly missed. 


The Motley’s home was my home away from home for many years and Greg was so trusted by his parents that he never had a curfew that I can recall.  Cruising around the boro in his moms Bonneville, or cat ing around as she called it, we’re some very memorable times. 
I miss those days and will never forget my old friend. May God give rest to his soul.

Greg was a very kind and caring person that always had a smile on his face.  If you ever needed a little cheering up all you had to do was strike up a conversation with Greg.  His love of life and his family was always at the heart of he was and he was always very happy to share his wonderful memories.  He had a positive influence on everyone he met and will be missed by all that knew him.

"Presence." 

My uncle retired as a colonel in the Army. He once described someone as a great natural leader with tangible 'presence'. It is a word that sums up more than just honor and professionalism in the Army, but also leadership and inner strength... a kind of natural and undeniable charisma. I think it is the word that best suits my friend, Greg Motley.  But those of you who knew him do not need to be told that. You know it already.

Greg was the best engineer on my R&D team, even though he did not have a degree. We became fast friends because we could somehow share a thought by talking it out. What resulted was a successful demonstration of how to contain a high voltage explosion by placing steel in the right amount and in the right places, and that started us down the road of developing a little pot of contingency cash for the big-time "Prodigy" project into a design project of its own called, yes of all things, "Teddy Bear". (No, for the last time, I did not name it! haha!)

There are three things I will always remember about Greg Motley: 1) His smiling eyes. It is so rare these days. He just always seemed very comfortable in his own skin and sure of himself. 2) His can-do attitude. We talked often about the importance of sketching and the ability to imagine things that have not been created yet. This, of course, being the definition of good engineering. 3) His love for his family. He was proud of his son and daughter and the lives they created for themselves. And it seemed like every day brought another opportunity to tell us a clever story of "Did I ever tell you about when Sissy and I went to the...". What a great story teller!

A couple of months ago, out of nowhere, I felt the urge to text Greg just to say hello. He told me about the new apartment, how close he and Sissy were to their son's place in Brentwood, how happy he was about the upcoming wedding of his daughter. He was happy and full of life. RIP my friend, You live forever in my heart.
