Dr. Alfred J. Luccarelli was born on July 6, 1925 in the Bronx, NY, to Dominick and Margherita Luccarelli. He was the youngest of eight children. When Alfred was six months old, his father passed away, leaving the young mother and the children to grow and sell vegetables on the 73 acre family farm to make ends meet.
Alfred’s childhood revolved around working on the farm with his family, studying hard at school, and playing baseball on the weekends. With the onset of World War II, Alfred was drafted into the Army where he became a medic. He was very proud to have been stationed on the Pacific Island of Tinian, from which the plane that carried the atomic bombs took off and eventually ended the war. Back home Alfred finished his undergraduate education in Pre-Med at Fordham University, even skipping a year. He then went to Washington, DC, to finish his studies and become one of the most successful dentists in the Throgs Neck area. Alfred met Marjorie O’Dell when she was only 17 years old, they dated for seven years, and were married in 1953. The newlyweds settled in Pelham Manor, NY, and had four children.
Alfred retired in 1985 and moved to Brooksville, Florida, into his log cabin dream home, that he built himself. He and Margie had 14 acres of land and many animals. Alfred always wanted to recapture the happiness he had with his siblings working the farm. It was then that he started a business called “Almar Farm” where they trained and bred thoroughbred race horses. Alfred would eventually become a very successful breeder, and his beloved horses were represented at racetracks all over the country.
In all his endeavors, Alfred strived to be the best. Besides his love of all animals and nature, he enjoyed tennis, reading, going to the beach, and cooking. He especially enjoyed eating spaghetti and pizza.
In 2017, Margie, Alfred’s wife of 64 years, passed away and he never fully recovered from the loss. He suffered with Alzheimer’s toward the end of his life, and died peacefully in his sleep, at Cobblestone Manor, an Assisted Living facility on January 19, 2019. Alfred is survived by his four children and their spouses, plus nine grandchildren: Gail & Frank Sirko, Ralph & Tina Luccarelli, Dr. Steven & Barbara Luccarelli and Phyllis & Michael Congemi.
