

SMITH, Edith Starkey, age 96 of Brooksville, passed away, Thursday, December 1, 2016. She was born January 6, 1920, the youngest of 3 children, in Tishomingo County, Mississippi. She attended junior college for 2 years on a women’s basketball scholarship and during WWII she became part of the war effort working for Goodyear and later as a “Riveter” building B-25 planes in Memphis, TN. Around 1945 she moved to Brooksville where she married Goldie Smith, raised four sons, spent 40 years as a poll worker for the Supervisor of Elections, was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Brooksville and fondly remembered as a Hernando High School study hall teacher. She was preceded in death by her husband, Goldie Smith. Survivors include her sons & daughters-in-law: Bob & Mary Hasson of Texas, Jerry & Kim Smith and Larry & Lori Smith all of Brooksville and Rick & Sara Smith of Washington; grandchildren: Bob, Donna, Jody, Carrie, Jeremy, Kriscinda, Jamie, Michael, Jimmy, Hilary, Amber, Kris, Ricky & Chloe; many great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A celebration of Mrs. Smith’s life will be held at a later date.
