She was born on September 13, 1930, in Groveland NY. She was the second child of five children born to Lawrence and Evangeline Toland. She fondly remembered the little schoolhouse that her sisters and brother attended before graduating from Geneseo High School in 1947. She furthered her education by attending Craig Colony School of Nursing in Sonyea NY. After graduation she married Robert A. McClelland in 1952 and began living the life of the wife of an Air Force military man.
They moved wherever their service was needed. Joyce was loyal to her husband, supported her children and was dedicated to her faith. In each new city they moved they found a Methodist church to join. Joyce continued to grow in her faith by becoming a member of Women’s Aglow. Each day began with a daily devotional, bible reading and prayer. Many friends knew her as a “prayer warrior.”
Throughout her life she enjoyed finding more information about her ancestors and genealogy. After finding out she was a descendant of the Mayflower, she could not wait to go to Plymouth England and stand on the steps that her ancestors stood on to board the Mayflower.
Some of her favorite pass time activities were reading, puzzles, playing scrabble, card games, and sewing crafts.
Joyce leaves to cherish her memory her beloved sons, Lee (Suzanne), Roy (Donna), and Richard (Claudia); her cherished daughters, Sandy (Lloyd) McDaniel and Terry (Mickie) Rose; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She is also lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews, along with a host of dear relatives and friends.
