Don't know why he came to mind, but a quick search and I learned of his passing. I was a student of his my senior year (70-71) at Crystal River High School. Will always remember him as one of the best teachers I have ever had. He made Biology II a class that I looked forward to. If I'm not mistaken, it was at the beginning of his teaching career and we began the course with no books so he actually had to teach. Great guy. Great teacher.

So sorry to hear of the loss of this fine man.  I was a student of his over 40 years ago, yet he remembered me when we spoke at the 40th Anniversary of PHCC last year.  He was a great teacher, and a fine human being, and will be sorely missed.

Mike was a student in my class in physiological ecology at the USF campus in St. Petersburg the summer of 1966. An excellent student and a wonderful person. With sympathy. John Lawrence, Professor of Biology Emeritus, USF.

I met Mike at several of our outings and was very impressed with his fervor for birding.  We had talked about getting together to discuss past presidents of CCAS with also the thought of getting to know one another better.  I regret that this did not happen. He was to be our speaker at our upcoming meeting on March 19, 2014.  I will ask for a moment of silence to remember him at the meeting.

I feel privileged to have been a student of his at PHCC.  What a wonderful man, and my heart goes out to everyone.

What a shock to learn that Mike had crossed over.  I just wish I could have seen him one more time.  His office was on the same corridor as mine at PHCC and we had many stimulating discussions--he, the scientist; me the humanities  prof.  Mike and Sheila took me in on nights my last class ended after 10 p.m. to save me an hour's drive home and class the next morning--a kindness for which I was deeply grateful. "Cross over, Mike, cast that golden rod and count the heavenly roseate spoonbills!"

It goes without saying Mike was a great guy. I will miss a lot about him, but mostly I will miss that booming laugh of his. Even though he was fighting health problems in recent years, he was always up beat. I was hoping to have more chances to go birding a fishing with Mike. He will be missed by so many.

I got to know Mike much better when he joined Mary Dowdell and me for the Citrus County CBC on January 4th.  I enjoyed being with him and looked forward to future opportunities to be in his company.  I am pleased that he had a great time in the outdoors with us that day.  He let us know that.  We will miss him.  Sincerely,Rey Wells

It is hard to imagine just what we will miss the most about Mike. His smile, his laugh, his ability to dance and make rain happen. Maybe it was his joy in living, or his desire to share his knowledge, his strong beliefs in environmental concerns, his companionship and curiosity while birding, his willingness to explain what he knew about every creature that was brought up from the deep when fishing. It could be his sense of wonder about all things natural. We do know this, he will keep teaching us for the rest of our lives and for that we could not be more thankful.

Sympathies to Sheila and the family and friends.  Hoyt said everything profoundly.  We have lost a great environmental guru.  God Bless you in your grief.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Sheila and her family during this sad time.Mike Wollam was a man bigger than life and he lived life to the fullest.  For some thirty-eight years, Sharon and I have had the honor, privilege and joy to know Mike and Sheila and count them among our very best friends.Mike was a great teacher and enjoyed his lengthy period at Pasco-Hernando Community College and his involvement with his students.After retirement Mike and Sheila travelled widely; seeing much of our country, and always making new friends and seeing old friends.Mike was a family man, and enjoyed an active involvement with his children and later with his grandchildren.Mike was the ultimate fisherman. However, I'm not sure which he enjoyed more, fishing or bird watching.Mike was always the gentleman; and generous with his time to help others.He was always concerned and involved with protecting our environment.The world is a better place because of Mike's living in it.With great respect, admiration, and love,Hoyt and Sharon Maulden
