Mr. Parker was born on September 19, 1923 in Lincolnton, Georgia and grew up in Toombs County, Georgia, before moving to Glynn County in the early 1950’s. He worked for Hayes Construction Company in his early life as a construction worker before moving to California and ultimately settling ins Selma, Alabama, where he owned his own cement finishing business for many years. After selling his business in Selma, Alabama, Mr. Parker returned to Glynn County where he spent his time gardening and visiting with friends. At the age of 70, after being retired for years, Mr. Parker became a “People Greeter” for Wal-Mart, which he enjoyed immensely. He could not believe that he actually got paid for doing what he loved best, which was meeting new people and seeing old friends on a daily basis. He considered Wal-Mart his “home away from home” and was often kidded about being “Sam Walton,” which he loved. No matter where he went, he always sought out Wal-Mart stores to introduce himself and let them know that he too, was employed at Wal-Mart. He retired from Wal-Mart in 2010 after 15 years. Although born almost totally deaf, Mr. Parker loved music and loved to play his harmonica. The family will receive friends Monday, June 9th, 2014 from 6:00 p.m.to 8:00 p.m. at Edo Miller Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of The Golden Isles.
