

Carol was born in Alma, GA, to Leon Talmadge Thompson and Nanny Sibley Thompson on March 27, 1938. From an early age, it was evident that Carol was musically talented. She was blessed with a beautiful voice and directed church choirs as a teenager and was a requested singer for many events. After marriage to Grady Meeks in 1956, they moved around until settling on St. Simons Island in 1964. They joined the St. Simons United Methodist Church, where Carol immediately joined the choir under Barbara Meadows. She taught Sunday school and directed children’s choir. Carol was also a Stephen Ministry counselor. She loved God and his people. She was able to attend Brunswick Junior College and participate in production of “Jesus Christ Superstar” as Mary Magdalene. When Grady bought Stutts Drugs on Norwich St., she became bookkeeper and spent hours at the drugstore supporting the business that they had for 25 years.
Carol was also a very talented needlework artist. Carol opened a store, the Yarn Spinner, with her daughter, Deena. She and Deena shared their craft and skills for several years. Carol also loved to travel abroad and through the United States with her family members. The greatest joy in Carol’s life was her family. She felt great pride in their individual accomplishments and achievements. She will be greatly missed by her family, her many friends and her 2 cats.
She was preceded in death by Grady L. Meeks, her husband for 55 years. She was also preceded by her parents, Leon and Nannie Thompson and sibling, Dr. L T.(Speed) Thompson of Statesboro.
Surviving are her children, Deena (Don) Hoch, Carol Diann Meeks of St. Simons Island, and Steve (Brenda) Meeks of Brunswick. She is also survived by grandchildren: David A. Hoch, Diana Hoch (Austen), Melanie Meeks (Dustin). In addition, she is survived by her great grandchildren: Braxton Meeks and Charlotte Gordon. Carol is survived by her sister, Dr. Jane Thompson from Darien and her daughter, Caroline and granddaughter, Olivia. She was loved and respected by many friends and family with special emphasis to Georgette (Fred) Rempfer and Barbara Meadows and the rest of the YaYas.
The family extends special appreciation to; Dr. William Grubb and his team; Dr. Rodriguez, Dr. Krull, and Beth Respess PA, the entire DaVita North staff, and the Hospice of the Golden Isles staff for making her last days so comfortable.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at 11am at the First United Methodist Church of Brunswick with a reception immediately following. A private graveside service for the family will be held at a later date at Oglethorpe Gardens next to her husband, Grady.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Carol’s name at the First United Methodist Church of Brunswick or the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia.
