

Cecelia Ann Ramsey Raines, 93, of St. Simons Island, passed away at Marsh’s Edge on August 16, 2017. She was born in St. Louis, MO, on March 12, 1924. She was the daughter of the late Maxwell and Martha Ramsey. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, John Nelson Raines II, and two brothers, Rev. Stanton Ramsey and Ben Ramsey. She is survived by four children and their spouses: Martha Sullivan (Jim), Nancy Day (Ken), Susan Tice (Bob), and John Nelson Raines III (Judy) and a niece, Betsy Ramsey, a nephew, Rev. Max Ramsey, and 11 grandchildren, a step-great- granddaughter, and two step-great-great- granddaughters.
Cele graduated from Washington University in St. Louis as valedictorian. She worked briefly for IBM. In 1948, she married John Raines (also with IBM) and honeymooned in Sea Island, where they later returned to retire. In between, they lived briefly in Denver (twice), San Francisco, and Syracuse, N.Y. The family finally settled in Greenwich, CT, for 41 years. She raised four children while serving in many leadership positions in her church and community. Locally, she was the first recipient of CASA Glynn’s Alice Bradford Award. Even in her late eighties, Cele visited hospitals and nursing homes, using a walker herself. She will be long remembered for her warm, positive spirit.
A memorial service will be Monday, August 21, 11 a.m. at St. Simons Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Alan Dyer officiating. A graveside service will be held August 24th at Sunset Memorial Park in St. Louis, MO, where Mrs. Raines will be laid to rest with her husband.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the St. Simons Presbyterian Church in lieu of flowers.
