In Hazlehurst, GA in the middle of a cornfield a country boy was born to George and Lois Chaney. That country boy, Charles Thomas Chaney, went Home to greener pastures July 17, 2021. Though his heart failed him, the love his family has for this "peacemaker, family glue, back bone, salt of the earth, and Rock of the Chaney family", will live on.
Charles was born to Rev. George and Lois Chaney on September 21, 1949. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Sue Chambers and a daughter, Enola Gay Chaney. Survivors include his beautiful wife of 52 years, Ava LaVerne Chaney, a son, James Chaney, 2 daughters, Ava Chaney Crews and Cindy MacIntyre and husband, Blake. A brother in law, Danny (Cheri) Bartlett, niece, Sue Moore (Bill) and special cousin, Ruth Moss also survive.
Grandchildren surviving are: Mia and Terry Lee, Myra and Steven Brady, Levi Cox, Brandon and Bria Cox, Rebecca Chaney, Katelyn Chaney, Sarah Chaney, Abbie Chaney, and Charlie Chaney. 8 great grandchildren also cherish Charles' memory. His family remembers Charles as the greatest man who ever lived and his favorite saying, "I'm gonna give you a knuckle sammich."
Charles, lovingly known as "Charlie" by those who knew him best and "Charlie Brown" by his little sister, was a resident of Waynesville, GA for 46 years. This 1967 Glynn Academy graduate, who always had a buck-eye in his pocket, stood for his flag and country in the National Guard for 21 years. He met the love of his life, Laverne Chaney, when he was handpicked by her mother while he worked at the Pic-N-Save while pursuing a degree at Masse Tech.
He provided for his young family while working at B&W as a fabricator until the factory closed. He never complained once when he spent the following year working at Miles Fabrication, away from his family to put food on the table until he was hired by Georgia Pacific. At GP he worked as a Class A Electrician and a Double A Mechanic. When he was not working, "Chinaberry" (his CB handle), was found at the Hooterville Hunting Club as a charter member. He spent many nights with his other great love, his white, blue-tick dog, "Lisa", coon hunting.
Charles was ordained as a deacon at King Memorial Baptist Church in 1980. He served the church leadership throughout his life and was a member of Little Memorial Baptist Church at the time of his passing.
In 1998, this hardworking country boy suffered a debilitating stroke that caused him to retire from Georgia Pacific. As he did all things, he did not grumble or question, but continued to be gracious and peaceful in his daily walk. For many years he was an active member of the Southeast GA Regional Medical Center Stroke Group. Charles enjoyed camping trips to Guyton and maintained his enthusiasm for bluegrass music and the Braves. He was the type of guy who left the porch light on for anyone coming to visit. He always had a warm welcome with a black and white western playing in the background.
Though life threw him some curveballs, even a son in law who does not mud bog, own a gun or know how to put his own boat in the water, Charles always found himself too blessed to let the "little things" bring him down.
We certainly wish we had more time with him here on this Earth. We know he won't complain about being taken Home to Glory, especially if they have 1\2 and 1\2 sweet tea and a piece of fallen pound cake to share.
May the legacy left behind be filled with beautiful memories and love for all those who knew Charles.
