Jim was born on August 8, 1942 to Thomas and Marie Wilmer in Albany, GA. As a military dependent Jim lived in several states and spent two years in Okinawa Japan before eventually returning to Georgia where he graduated from Sandy Springs High School in 1960.
After high school, Jim went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia in 1965. He then joined the Army becoming a Civil Affairs Officer, exiting almost 3 years later as a 2nd Lieutenant. Jim then returned to UGA earning a Masters in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling. His stints at UGA resulted in Jim becoming a life-long, avid member of the “Bulldawg Nation”!
Jim went on to work as a parole counselor and drug and alcohol counselor before eventually moving to the Washington, DC area to work for the government in the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration and US Marshall’s office.
After retiring, Jim returned to Georgia, living first in Darien where he frequently joined a group of locals over coffee at the Purple Pickle. While in Darien, he met and married Jean McMahon and they settled on St Simon’s Island where together they attended The Chapel Methodist Church in Brunswick.
Jim enjoyed the simple pleasures of life; good coffee, engaging adventure/mystery/thriller books, fishing and spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed writing short stories, songs and his many years of farming and raising goats in Virginia. Jim was a good listener because he truly cared about people.
Like most of us, Jim had regrets throughout his life, but he recognized the hand of God throughout his life and was grateful for the saving grace of Jesus.
Jim is predeceased by his parents, Tom and Marie. He is survived by his wife Jean, daughter Anna Marie Smith (Frank), son Michael Wilmer (Summer), stepson Will McMahon, sister Judy Draffin (Tom), former wife and mother of his children Linda Wilmer, grandchildren Jordan, Michael, Marcus, Alyssa, Anthony and Braden, nephew Chad Simpson (Shannon) and niece Jodi Young (Forrest).
