

On Sunday, April 17th, 2016, Alice ‘Dean’ Overall departed this earth and reunited with those she loved and lost. Born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1927, Alice, forever known as Dean graduated from The Tower Hill School, and went on to Douglass College achieving a B.A. in Journalism, a career she pursued and excelled in. After College she started writing Ad Copy for the local Wilmington newspapers, where eventually she became a feature writer and reporter.
In 1951 Dean married David Hill and they resided in Cambridge, Massachusetts while David completed his graduate studies. Dean and David had three children, Charles of St. Simons Island, Georgia, John of Alexandria, Virginia, and Andrew or Portola Valley, California.
In 1969 Dean and David moved to Chevy Chase, Maryland where Dean became editor of the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Tribune as well as a Commissioner for the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission. Dean was also the chairperson of the local chapter of the League of Women Voters, as well as The American Association of University Women.
In 1981 Dean married Captain Sidney Overall USN, and moved to St. Simons Island, Georgia. The two became active in local and community affairs as well as avid travelers. Together they wrote a travel column for the Coastal Illustrated that chronicled their adventures. Dean and Sid also organized ‘PUFFS’ People United For Friendly Smoking advocating manners not legislation to curb public smoking. Dean and Sid’s advocacy was well documented and later they appeared on Phil Donahue’s show as well as Oprah.
Dean was active in St. Williams Church as well as Marshes Edge, the retirement community she resided in the last ten years.
Busy as Dean was, she never allowed family to take a back seat, she was an active and adoring mother and grandmother. She leaves three sons, 7 grandchildren, 5 step children and countless friends. Dean will be at final rest in Arlington National Cemetery alongside her beloved Sid.
