Doris Theresa Reed Rowe went to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 19, 2013. She was born on September 1, 1921, into the Christian family of Robert Richard Reed and Nellie Theresa Daily Reed of East Liverpool, Ohio.
Doris was predeceased by her husband of four decades, Remo Rowe. She is survived by her daughter, Theresa Carolyn, and her grandson, Steven Croft, and cherished family and friends.
Before her marriage, Doris worked with pride for the J.A. Jones Shipyards in Brunswick. The shipyard was a wartime effort that operated twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Utilizing six ways, the J.A. Jones employees built ninety-nine Liberty Ships within two years – absolute record time. When a Christmas Day arrived, the J.A. Jones employees donated their full pay to the United States Treasury, and Doris well remembered the generosity of Mr. Albert Crews, who provided everyone a Christmas meal, at his own expense.
After her marriage, Doris joined Remo at his restaurant, the successful Wayside Grill, where Doris became the acclaimed cook.
After they sold the Wayside Grill, Doris accompanied Remo, a member of the I.B.E.W., at project locations, including Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and upstate New York and Aiken, South Carolina, at the Savannah River Project. Doris was a talented homemaker and made every location pleasant for her family. Remo was a pilot and had an airplane, allowing them to return to St. Simons frequently, and they eventually returned to stay.
This gave Doris the opportunity for employment as a tolltaker on the Sidney Lanier Bridge, where she took the very first toll and the very last toll, when the bridge became toll-free. She worked all shifts, in rotation, never missing a day’s work. Then she worked for twenty years on the floor of Brunswick Manufacturing, Inc., retiring only because the work contracts were sent overseas. She truly enjoyed all her employment locations and the friendships she made.
For years Doris spent every day at the pier on St. Simons, and when she was no longer driving, her daughter took her every day, for Doris to enjoy her lunch and the wonderful scenery. Doris’s family is grateful to the pier’s friendly people, who made Doris’s later years so pleasurable.
Doris was a league champion bowler. She had a beautiful singing voice and many fine virtues.
Doris Theresa Reed Rowe leaves behind a legacy of care and kindness for wildlife and birds and her family’s treasured memories of her.
Her ashes will be interred at Christ Church, Frederica, at a later date. Edo Miller and Sons Funeral
