

Dorothy McKinna Burns, a 27-year resident of Brunswick, died Monday, February 4th at Hospice of the Golden Isles of complications from a broken hip. She was 94 years old and the last of the five McKinna sisters, Evelyn Rhyne, Effie Bennett, Daisy Reynolds and Virginia Majors Smith, who predeceased her.
Born September 9, 1918, in Chipley, Florida, she served in the Women's Army Corps from 1943 to 1946 as a cryptographer and traveled extensively in Europe and China. Following the war she worked in Guam where she met her husband of 45 years, George William Burns, who predeceased her in 1996. She was a retired federal employee and a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE).
Survivors include: two brothers, Richard McKinna of Brunswick and Gorden Koonce McKinna of Charlotte, NC; nieces and nephews Beth Carroll and Richard McKinna, Jr., of Brunswick; Greg McKinna of New York; Cindy Flanders of Turtletown, TN; Cappie Harper of Atlanta, GA; Dill Harper of Florence, SC; Bob Majors of Savannah, GA; Gordon, Mark, Richard, and Glenn Rhyne of Fort Walton Beach, FL; Kathy McKinna and Gordon McKinna, Jr. of Charlotte, NC; Bill and Sid Bennett of Waycross, GA; as well as numerous great nieces and nephews.
A memorial gathering will be held from 12:00-2:00 p.m., Friday, February 8, at Edo Miller Funeral Home in Brunswick. Relatives and friends are welcome to attend.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that any memorial contributions be made to the Hospice of the Golden Isles or Glynn County Animal Services.
