Emeris Eugene "Smitty" Smitherman

Emeris Eugene "Smitty" Smitherman, 93, of St. Simons Island, departed this life Monday, April 3, 2023 at his residence. Funeral Services will be conducted Friday, April 7, 2023 at 2 pm in the Chapel of Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home with Reverend Rob Grotheer officiating. Interment will follow in Chapel Park Cemetery with Military Honors. Josh Anderson, Derek McLean, Camron McLean, Rylan Kelley, Hunter Anderson, Phil Huckaby, Kyle Anderson, and Lane Anderson will serve as pallbearers.

Born September 23, 1929 in Calhoun County, Alabama to the late James Daniel and Carrie F. Smitherman, he was a 1948 graduate of Cave Spring High School, Cave Spring, Georgia and received a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Business from Berry College in 1953. He then served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict from 1953 – 1955. Mr. Smitherman worked at McKinnon Airport on St. Simons Island and retired in 1994 from the FAA as Chief of Flight Service. He had been a resident of St. Simons Island since 1974 and was a member of College Place United Methodist Church for over 50 years. He served as a Layman and was active in the Methodist Men’s Group and Prime Timers. Mr. Smitherman enjoyed gardening and working in the yard, feeding the birds, seine netting, and spending time with his family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Doris Virginia Sheets Smitherman, a brother, Tom Smitherman, and a sister, Sue Huckaby.

Survivors include three daughters, Michele Smitherman of St. Simons Island, Tammy McLean and husband Dwayne of Fleming Island, FL, and Terri Anderson and husband Jeff of Waverly, five grandchildren, Kortni Fournier and husband Raymond, Josh Anderson and Priscilla Thompson, Kyle Anderson, Derek McLean and wife Claire, Camron McLean, and seven great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Friday, April 7, 2023 from 12:30 pm until the funeral hour at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be made to https://pancreasfoundation.org/ or https://alzfdn.org/ .
