Allan passed away Friday, November 15, 2013 at home under the care of Hospice of the Golden Isles. He was born December 10, 1928 in Kite, Georgia. His parents were the late Crawford and Mary (Tyson) Powell. He had been a resident of Brunswick since 1945.
He delivered telegrams, worked at the shipyard, served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and retired from Brunswick Pulp and Paper Company in March 1988 as an electrician. He loved woodworking, gardening, and growing his flowers, especially roses and his beautiful yellow Cassia plant. So many people got Cassia plants from him that when we see them in bloom around town, we wonder if they came from him.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Gene Powell of Swainsboro, GA.
He is survived by his wife of 59 ½ years, Helen Christine Powell, who to him was always “My baby”; two daughters, Debbie Benton of Brunswick and Linda Daniels (Al) of Lexington, SC; one son, Ricky Powell (Marilyn) of Waverly, GA; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Jo Ann Brown of Marietta, GA; four brothers, Larry Croft of Atlanta, Darvin Powell (Dot) of Tallahassee, FL, M.L. Powell (Martha) of Gardi, GA, and Aaron Powell (Tommie) of Dublin, GA.
The family will receive friends Saturday, November 23, 2013 from 10:00 to 11:00 am at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. The memorial service will follow at 11:00 am with Rev. Ben Rainey and Jimmy Carter officiating. Honorary pallbearers are David Erskine, Gary Miller, Tommy Miller, J.L. Johns, Bobby Johns, Larry Johns, Brenda and Buddy Jones, Doris and Don Bankston, Retirees of Brunswick Pulp and Paper Company, Members of Brookman New Hope Methodist Church, Dr. Lana Skelton, Dr. Robert H.
