A graveside memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 4, 2010, at Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens, St. Simons Island, with Monsignor John Kenneally officiating.
Born June 8, 1925, in Portland, Ore., to the late John W. and Anna Margaret Hopp Miller, George grew up in Ilwaco, Wash., where he was a 1943 graduate of Ilwaco High School. After high school he enlisted in the U.S. Army. After serving his country during World War II in the China-Burma-India Theatre, he attended the University of Washington and graduated in 1950 with a bachelor’s degree in forestry. He then went on to Oregon State University and graduated in 1960 with a master’s degree in marine science.
In 1959, he married Mary Elizabeth Brasch. They moved to St. Simons Island in 1960, where he worked for the Georgia DNR for five years. He was employed with NOAA in Miami, Fla., from 1965 – 1985 as a marine biologist. They retired back to St. Simons Island and became avid antique bottle collectors. They attended St. William Catholic Church, St. Simons Island.
In 1992, he was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Mary Elizabeth Brasch Miller.
Survivors include two sons, William T. Miller of Jacksonville, Fla., and Donald W. Miller and wife Debbie of Kingsland; two granddaughters, Tarra N. Miller and Mary M. Miller; and many nieces and nephews.
