Helen Glawson Brewster, 94, of St. Simons Island, departed this life Saturday, December 26, 2015, at Magnolia Manor Nursing Home. A memorial service will be held at 11AM Saturday, January 9, 2016, at St. Simons United Methodist Church with Rev. Marcia Cochran officiating.
Born April 22, 1921, in Sumter County, Georgia, to the late James Henry and Luna Howe Glawson, Helen was a retired teacher who taught in the public school system in Lithia Springs, Georgia. After retirement she became a homemaker and was very involved with her late husband, Rev. Daniel Fitzgerald Brewster, in his work as a pastor and later as Director of Higher Education and Campus Ministries in the North and South Georgia United Methodist Conferences.
Helen also set a memorable example by devoting herself to caring for numerous elderly relatives and spending countless hours tending to their many needs and being a companion to them.
She had been a resident of St. Simons Island since 2001 and was a member of St. Simons Island United Methodist Church. She enjoyed reading, cooking, traveling, church activities, and time with family and friends. Helen and Dan liked entertaining and celebrating holidays in their home, and Helen was well known for her delicious meals and desserts and her thoughtful hostessing.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her sister, Betty G. Durham, her nephew Randy Durham, and her great-nephew Tony Durham.
Survivors include nephew Jim Durham and his wife, Kathleen, of St. Simon Island, and three great-nieces, Rebecca Durham and Sarah Durham, and Katie Durham Jarvis and her husband, Caleb, and Katie’s mother, Cindy Durham.
The family expresses special appreciation to Lessy Rolle and to the staff at Brightstar of Coastal Georgia for the dedicated, considerate care they gave Helen in her final months.
