Christian burial for Mr. Herman Yawn, 94, of Brunswick will be at 10:30 am , Friday, September 22, at College Place United Methodist Church in Brunswick with Dr. Bill Daniel officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Christ Church Frederica Cemetery on Saint Simons Island.
Mr. Yawn passed from a long and beautiful life peacefully on Thursday, September the 14th, surrounded by his loved ones.
Herman E. Yawn was born February 6, 1923 in Eastman, Georgia to Sydney and Ethel.
During his childhood and early years he lived and worked in and around Dodge County in the timber business. He worked along with his three brothers: Russell, Jack, and Gene. Herman experienced a logging accident which led to a fracture of his back. He eventually recovered, however it was this injury that prevented him from being allowed to enlist in the army during World War II.
Instead, he went to work during the war building Liberty Ships in Brunswick, Georgia. He was saddened by his inability to enlist but he believed he was doing his part to serve his country during this arduous time.
After the war Herman met and fell in love with the love of his life, Frankie Watson. Frankie caught his eye while shopping in Eastman. Frankie did not immediately give in to his advances, but finally succumbed to his charm. They were married on August 28, 1947. Mr. Yawn was a devoted Methodist and was a charter member of College Place Methodist Church. After their wedding they began their married life together in Brunswick, Georgia.
Herman and Frankie had one child together, a son, Gary Yawn.
Herman was a very talented barber and spent most of his life running one of the most influential barber shops in Brunswick. Herman used to joke that if you wanted to get elected to office in Brunswick or Glynn County you better stop by the shop. Herman could tell jokes and stories that would have everyone in the barbershop rolling on the floor. He has seen the Golden Isles change and grow. He has cut the hair of generations of families and been a staple of the community he cherished. He loved his shop and all of his customers very much. He reluctantly retired (somewhat) at the age of 93.
Above all Herman was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He loved every member of his family and served each of them any way he could.
Mr. Yawn was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Russell Yawn, Jack Yawn, Gene Yawn, and Sydney Yawn.
Those left to honor and cherish his memory are his loving wife of 70 years, Frankie Yawn; son, Gary Yawn and wife Marilyn; grandchildren Dr. Gary Yawn, Jr. and wife Amanda; Rev. Justin Sidney Yawn and wife, Vanessa; great-grandchildren, Catherine Lucille and Aidan Kay; plus numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members; plus a community of patrons and friends.
The pallbearers are Jimmy Knight, David Ussery, Burton Franklin, Oscar Covington, Neil Jump, Rev. Douglas Renegar, and Dr. Darrin Strickland. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Mitchell Jones, John Rodgers, Rev. Franklin Pierce, Rev. George Herndon, Johnny Wainwright, Jack Moran, Junior Poppell, Marty Thompson, Bill Brunson, Frank Moore, the staff of Old Times Barber Shop, and the Co-Ed Sunday School Class.
