

Born in Doddridge County, West Virginia, he was the son of the late James Harrison Cunningham Sr. and H. Floyd and Lena Swiger.
Jim was a retired U.S. Navy veteran serving from 1940 to 1960. He was rewarded a Purple heart for injuries suffered when his ship U.S. Navy Destroyer DD 412 Hammann was sunk while aiding the Yorktown at the Battle of Midway. In 2003, he was the keynote speaker at the Midway Battle Commemoration.
Surviving are his sons, James Frederick Cunningham (Cherie) of Ocala, FL and Floyd Stephen “Butch” Cunningham (Cheryl) of Brunswick, GA. His grandchildren, Colleen Cunningham of Orlando, FL, Michelle Hogue (Curtis) of Westport, CT, Vanessa Baldwin (Micheal) of Louisville, KY, Kenneth Cunningham (Nanami) of Marietta, GA, and Stephen Cunningham (Julie Ann) of Sardis, GA. His great-grandchildren, Adalie, Brayden, and Sullivan Cunningham of Sardis, GA. His half-sisters, Jean Stamm of Salem, WV, Mary J. Porter of Beaver, PA, Joy L. Whelchel of Deltona, FL, and Harriet McQuaid of Lumberport, WV; his half-brothers, William Swiger of Salem, WV, Patrick H. Cunningham (Betty) of Lumberton, WV, and Frank O. Cunningham (Lyvone) of Bushy Fork, WV. He was pre-deceased by his half-brothers, Floyd “Junior”Swiger, Thomas Cunningham, David Cunningham, carl Cunningham, and Clarence Cunningham; and his half-sisiters, Betty Nay, Jean Elsey, Carol Williams, Violet Rider, Vera Nutter, and Margaret McQuaid.
The family will receive friends at Greathouse Funeral Home, 1999 W. Main Street, on Saturday, February 18, 2017 1:00PM until time of service at 2:00PM. Interment will follow in the K of P Cemetery in Salem, WV.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials should be directed to Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick, GA 31525 or a charity of the donor’s choice.
