James R. "Jim" Poppell, Sr.

James R. "Jim" Poppell, 78, passed away Monday, July 30, at his home on St. Simons Is. under the care of his family and Hospice of the Golden Isles. He was born in Wayne County on May 9, 1934 to parents Frank Poppell and Lois Williams Poppell. After graduating from Odum High School, he attended Middle Georgia College. He then spent time on active duty in the U. S. Army stationed at Fort Riley Kansas and Wurzburg, Germany. On his return to the States, he was employed in the lab at Rayoneir in Jesup. He later graduated from the University of Georgia School of Pharmacy and spent the remainder of his professional life as a registered pharmacist primarily with Winn Dixie Stores, Inc. in Glynn County serving customers in stores in Brunswick and on St. Simons Island. Jim had found his vocation in this work as he enjoyed the interaction with customers, many of whom became friends, plus he understood the value of assisting people who had health needs. He was an avid golfer who spent time watching and talking about the game and especially enjoyed playing golf with friends on every possible opportunity. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Lois Poppell, a brother, Rodney Poppell, and a son, James Robert Poppell, Jr.

Survivors include two daughters, Catherine Poppell and Margaret Stark (William), his former wife, Missy Poppell, and faithful canine companion 'D'. Among other survivors are a brother, Kenneth Poppell (Vivian), a sister Faye Horton (LeRoy) of Wayne County and several nieces and nephews.

The family requests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of the Golden Isles. Visitation at 6:00 to 8:00 p. m. Friday, August 3, and the Service on Saturday, August 4, at l0:30 a.m. with Dr. Derrell Rentz officiating will be held at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home at 3321 Glynn Avenue. in Brunswick. www.edomillerandsons.com
