Julia W. Horton of Jekyll Island, GA died on February 6, 2018.
Julia was preceded in death by her husband of 76 years Earl C. Horton. Survivors include three children: Cynthia Latham (Robert), Richard Horton (Sheryl), and Celia Lare; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild also survive.
Julia was born in Atlanta, GA, where she graduated from Girls' High School. After her marriage to Earl, they lived in Georgia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. They retired to Jekyll Island in 1972.
Mrs. Horton was an active leader in the Girl Scouts in Nashville, TN, and served on the National Girl Scouts Board. On Jekyll Island, she served as President of the Garden Club, President of the Episcopal Church Women, and was a member of the Jekyll Island Art Association, the Sand Dollar Club, the JILLs, Friends of Historic District, and the Jekyll Singers. Both Julia and Earl were active in the Founders Council of Georgia Tech, the Turtle Project of Jekyll Island, and the Southeast Georgia Hospital Foundation, and members of St. Richard’s Episcopal Church.
A memorial service will be held Friday, February 16, at 2 p.m. at St. Richard's Episcopal Church, Jekyll Island.
