Leroy, as he was known, was born in South Creek, North Carolina on March 31, 1939 to the late Clara Myrtice Mayo Whorton and the late Julius Timothy Whorton. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Daniel Atwood Whorton.
Leroy graduated from New Bern High School in New Bern, NC, Georgia Military College and got a scholarship to play football for Wake Forest and University of Georgia. After college, Leroy built his career in the seafood industry with a fleet of commercial fishing boats working the oceans from Alaska to Texas, Key West to Virginia, North Carolina to Nova Scotia.
Leroy loved America and was a proud member of the Sons of Confederacy, the Republican Party and a Patriot. He loved to read, watch documentaries and historical shows as well as his news and stock reports. A lover of great seafood, nothing pleased him more than to have company for dinner. He always offered words of encouragement and was there to lend a helping hand.
Left to cherish his memories is his wife of 53 years, Courtney Music Whorton, a son, Julius “Jules” Timothy Whorton, his sister, Barbara Whorton Pilgrim Smith, sisters-in-law Marie Westberry and Amy Music, brother-in-law Jim Music (Pat), numerous nieces and nephews and his precious bulldog, Dixie.
Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home.
